Premature supraventricular complexes are beats that represent premature activation of the atria by a focus other than the sinus node.
Electrocardiographic Criteria
Premature atrial complex
- Ectopic beat of atrial origin with P waves that are premature relative to the baseline cycle and whose morphology differs from the sinus P wave
- Premature atrial complexes may occur with aberrant conduction, or may even be blocked (nonconducted)
Premature junctional complex
- Early ectopic beat originating in the AV node
- There are three possible electrocardiographic presentations: a negative P wave in the inferior leads with a short PR interval; no atrial activity before the QRS (P wave buried within the QRS); or a negative P wave in the inferior leads after the QRS complex
